Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I am writing you in hopes for the 21-day appeal deadline to be waived. Throughout the 2015/2016 school year I endured various medical complications that were beyond my control, such as: epilepsy, concussions, and serve tonsillitis resulting in a surgery. Due to these extenuating circumstances I sought to receive extension on term work for POLS 250. Although, my request for extensions was either denied or placed me at an unfair disadvantage compared to my peers. This included, but not limited to, my Academic Accommodations approved by Accessibility Services were not met during final examination, and I was denied the opportunity to write the midterm at an alternative time upon me receiving a serious concussion leaving me unable to attended the first 6 weeks of the Fall 2015 term.
These circumstance beyond my control led me to receive the lowest grade thus far of my academic career at Queen¿¿s University, which significant impacted my overall GPA. Upon receiving my final grade, I emailed Queen¿¿s University Academic Grievance Center seeking advice. I was advised to emailed my professor outlining the inequitable circumstances and how it does not truly reflect my academic ability, and proposal alternative solutions to have my grade actually reflect my academic ability. The professor agreed to waive my final exam mark, but there were other various external factors leading my midterm and essay grade to not accurately reflect my ability. If granted the ability to waive the 21-day deadline I will further outline these inequities that prevent me from achieving a grade that reflects my true academic ability.
I did not learn about the ability to appeal to decrease the weight of my POLS 250 grade until I met with an Academic Advisor in November. Despite reaching out to my professor and the Academic Grievance centre I was not informed of this possibility until then.
I have waited until now to write my appeal as I was enrolled in 18.0 credits during the Fall 2016 semesters and has various assignments due during November and December. During the Fall 2016 examination period a new medical condition arose leaving me extremely fatigue and attending various medical appointments. The new medical condition has now been resolved and under control. Thus, I felt it would be best to write my appeal once the medical issue was under control and had the appropriate time to outline my circumstances.
I have attached further evidence below for your reference, including the emails to and from my professor and Academic Grievance Centre.
Moving forward, I will ensure consult an Academic Advisors regarding any questions concerning my grades during the 21-day period.
I believe the circumstance above outline my efforts to resolve and seek advice regarding my POLS 250 grade during the 21-day appeal period. Despite, my efforts I was not made aware of the ability to appeal for a grades weight to be decreased. Thus, I am seeking the 21-day period to be waived therefore the circumstances beyond my control present throughout the 2015/2016 school year does not negatively impacted my GPA, nor future possibility, such as applying for exchange and graduate school.
