Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean (studies),
I¿¿m writing to you today requesting that the 21 day/ 1 term deadline for appeals be waived.
Last year I struggled with PTSD, stress, and ADHD. This continued well past the deadline for the events that I wish to appeal. I was unable to deal with my academic career until the 2016 fall semester had begun. This is the main reason I missed the deadlines. I was unable to submit an appeal until the deadline had passed.
The second circumstance that prevented me from meeting the appeal deadline was a lack of knowledge on the appeal process, combined with no time to start the appeal process. I went into guidance in late September to take control of my academic career assuming that my previous failures would be permanent. I was told that not all hope was lost and that I could appeal courses that were related to any extenuating circumstances. However at the time I was unaware of the 21 day/1 semester deadline. Due to this lack of knowledge about the deadline I decided to wait to submit my appeal. This was because I did not feel as though I was fully over the events of the previous year and I did not want to relive any of my experiences at the time. This was coupled with the fact that I have ADHD and I am not the best at juggling multiple things. I decided to focus on school since I was already 2 weeks behind in some of my classes when I went into guidance to take control of my academics. I went back to see an academic counselor during the 2016 fall exam period to discuss many things but the main reason was being the appeal process. I was at this time that I learned of the appeal deadline. Due to exams being underway I decided to wait to write this appeal. I waited until this day to submit my appeal to ensure that I had documentation of my extenuating circumstances as well as double checking with a guidance counselor that I had not missed any relevant information in this appeal. I apologize for the inconvenience and am trying to ensure that I can streamline the appeal so as to avoid any other inconvenience.
My plans for achieving academic success include working on maintaining my health and undergoing the appeal process, assuming this appeal is approved. I am maintaining my health in a variety of ways so as to ensure that I can focus on school. I plan submit and appeal to have certain course dropped. In doing so I will fully explaining the extenuating circumstances that affected the courses in question. I will also expand on what I have done and will continue to do in order to ensure my future success.
Sincerely,
Nicholas Cumming
