Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I am writing to request to drop SOCY 265, GNDS 125 and GNDS 370 and AG standing for SOCY227. If an AG standing is not possible, I would like to also drop SOCY 227.
Although you have graciously granted me an extended IN for SOCY227 last semester, I have found that completing the final assignment will be difficult, along with completing the rest of my requirements for my degree. My health condition has worsened in the last year, and at the advice of my counselor and doctor, I have taken the semester of Fall 2016 off, and is planning to take the rest of Winter 2017 off as well.
I will attach the documentation that prove that I was receiving treatment for my previous symptoms separately.
On March 20th, 2017, at the referral of my counselor, I saw a psychiatrist, who diagnosed me with Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar II and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Although I have been receiving treatment in the past for depression and anxiety, this diagnosis proved that the help I was getting was inadequate, and that I needed more help than I realized.
I have been put on more appropriate medication to stabilize my mood so that they target my bipolar disorder, and I would like to use the rest of this semester and the summer to recover my health find ways to cope with my new diagnosis so that I will be able to perform at my best self. I am planning to enroll myself into the Managing Powerful Emotions program, and continue working with my counselor to control my symptoms.
A symptom of Borderline Personality Disorder is that the patient has insufferable changes in mood and behaviour, this goes for Bipolar Disorder as well, coupled that with my Generalized Anxiety Disorder, attending lectures where I am hyperaware of my classmates and feel as if they are out to embarrass me at any moment, is detrimental to my studies because I am unable to focus on the lecture.
Furthermore, having an anxiety disorder and a mood disorder prevents me from doing everyday tasks. When taking care of myself to stay alive is extremely difficult, being able to concentrate and complete school work is a near-impossible task in my current condition. Not only that, my condition has plagued me with intrusive thoughts that prevented me from being able to put my best effort in my education.
Although these conditions will not disappear overnight, I am searching for tools to help me control the symptoms and be able to perform academically with my best self.
For these reasons, I am requesting a late drop for SOCY235, GNDS125, and GNDS370, and an AG for SOCY227. If an AG cannot be granted, I would like to also drop SOCY227.
I will send the appropriate documentations from my counselor and separately, for I do not see them until next week. They have told me that because it is currently a high-stress period for other students, they cannot work on the documentations right away. I will be able to have my documentations in by April 21st.
Yours sincerely,
Judy Kim
