Academic Appeal ¿¿ Extenuating Circumstances
My name is Talia Parker and in September of 2016, I began my first year as a full time student at Queens University within the Honours B.A. program. I was diagnosed with ADHD in Grade 12 and graduated from Lawrence Park Collegiate C.I. with an 83.8 average and was granted IEP status by Queens upon enrollment. While in attendance at Queens, I experienced two unfortunate events that form the basis of my academic appeal. I am requesting that my fall term courses are given a credit standing (CR) and my winter term courses are dropped.
On December 1st, 2016 I was in residence and studying for my upcoming final exams in addition to completing term papers and assignments. Unfortunately, on the evening of December 1st, I fainted in my room and hit my head in the process and was then diagnosed with a severe concussion by the medical staff at Kingston General Hospital. I immediately notified the faculty at Queens University of the situation and that I had been advised to return home to Toronto in order to recuperate from ongoing migraines. I returned to Queens on Monday, January 9th despite not having fully recovered and limited in my ability to study for extended periods of time. Accommodations were made by my professors to complete all my outstanding assignments and final exams. Unfortunately, several exams had to be rescheduled multiple times for lack of proper resources to accommodate the additional time allotted due to my IEP. The combination of having to study and prepare for my 4 final exams as well as completing the assigned second term projects and evaluations resulted in final first terms grades that did not reflect my true ability. In discussion with Haley Everson ¿¿ Appeals Coordinator and Academic Advisor, Faculty of Arts and Science I have been advised to appeal my first term grades accordingly.
In July of 2016, I began a serious relationship with Jake Thompson. My first love. Jake was a very important and special individual in my life and brought the upmost happiness to me and to all those around him. Although Jake was attending school in the United States, we decided to continue our relationship despite the distance. On March 5th of this year, Jake was found in his residence at Northeastern University having passed away from an apparent drug overdose. My parents arrived at Queens the morning of March 6th to deliver the devastating news and accompanied me back to Toronto. Since then I have remained in Toronto being surrounded by my friends and family as well as Dr. Ian Chen who have been imperative in helping me cope with the grief that I have endured following this incredible loss in my life. Some days are better than others but I am extremely appreciative of the support I am surrounded by here in Toronto as it has helped me get myself back on my feet. Unfortunately, I have opted to not return to Queens to complete the Winter semester and thus unable to complete my Winter term courses.
