Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
I am writing this letter to officially request to drop a course- specifically ENGL200 for the academic year of 2016-2017- due to poor performance I can only attribute to my struggles with mental health. I have been struggling with anxiety for a while, and my second year had been impacted as several family events have affected my mental health and me, extremely negatively. I had been struggling to keep up and cope with school with this anxiety for the entirety of the school year but my anxiety had gotten in the way of my performance, and I strongly believe that I had not been able to perform to the best of my abilities in this course. For instance, I had once sat in a class for ENGL200 and all I could think about was how small the large auditorium room felt, how nauseous I was. That class, I was only able to stay in class for 10 minutes and had to leave as I felt a giant attack coming on. That day, I consulted a psychologist from the on-campus counselling services and realized the extremity of my anxiety. My professor, Ms Elizabeth Hansone, has been kept in the loop and agrees that I had not been performing to the best of my abilities this school year, and has recommended I seek professional help and therapy during the course of the summer, which I am seeking to do.
I am confident that I would be able to perform well in ENGL200, as I am passionate about all things literature and writing. Unfortunately, things had not gone the way I'd like for them to, and I am seeking understanding from the board to successfully appeal to drop this course without penalty. I would like to be able to switch into an English major program, and having a failure for this core course on my transcript would have a very negative effect.
I sincerely hope I have appealed to your sympathetic sides and plead for your understanding.
Warmest Regards,
Julie Ro
