Dear Dean of Studies,
I am appealing the 21-day policy in regards to my appeal for a credit standing in Micr221.
This appeal is due to the fact that my extenuating circumstance was my first priority and I was unaware of the 21-day policy. After I had finished all my exams, I had realized the extent to which my pneumonia had affected me academically. I was unaware, until I went to academic counseling, that I had a legitimate reason to appeal. I was constantly ill second semester, and pneumonia was one of the easier illnesses. l was unaware that my circumstances were considered extenuating until I spoke with a counselor who encouraged me to go through with the appeal. After writing the exam, I asked to defer the rest of my exams to avoid a similar outcome. In the future, I will not write an exam when I am feeling ill and avoid appealing for a credit standing. Also, I will seek academic counseling sooner next time so I am aware of my options. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.

I am appealing for credit standing in Micro221 due to extenuating circumstances.
During the winter semester exam period I had pneumonia. I was sick for 6 days before I went to emerge. I was under the impression it was just a cold or cough, which is why I didn¿¿t seek help earlier. This physical illness knocked me out for the following week and a half after the doctor¿¿s visit. I was advised to take plenty of rest and was given a doctors note. For that following week and a half I was very weak and spent the majority of my time sleeping. Despite my cough and inability to stay awake, I managed some time to study for my first exam. Although I could have used a lot more time to study, I thought I wasn¿¿t sick enough to defer an exam. I had gone to the doctor on the 8th of April and was given a week restriction. The exam for Micr221 was April 12th,. I thought it would be enough time for me to get over the worse and start getting better. Unfortunately, I remained sick for more than a week after. My body felt drained of energy and couldn¿¿t hold out for the 3-hour exam period. Although I wasn¿¿t able to dedicate a lot of time to studying, I didn¿¿t think using my doctor¿¿s note was valid. Additionally, I thought it would be better to write the exam and accept the grade, as opposed to putting it off with the possibility of it interfering with my other exams. After I had written it, I realized my mistake and deferred all my exams until I was healthy. My final mark for Micro 221 suffered greatly, and was not an accurate reflection of how I did in the course. I ended up deferring my other exams to after the 21st when I had completely recovered and was able to concentrate properly. My final marks for the courses I deferred were substantially different than Micro 221. Attached is a copy of the doctor¿¿s note I received on the 8th of April.
