Dear Dean Blake,
I am appealing to have courses from my Winter 2017 transcript removed from my academic record, specifically Physiology 214, Statistics 263, and Microbiology 221.
The reason I am making this request is I have acknowledged that I suffer from high anxiety. In the fall term I admitted to others that I have a problem and that I needed help, as a necessary first step in beginning to address my anxiety. My anxiety causes me to be mentally and physically unstable to the point that I am unable to hold down meals and simple acts like getting out of bed can be overwhelming for me. I become so overtired and anxious that I usually blank out during an exam and need to focus on a spot on the wall.
Regarding Physiology 214, I did not drop this full year course by drop date because I believe I truly understand the material. Although my Fall term mark was low, I had a promising Winter mid-term mark, due mostly to the short answer format. My strategy was to reduce my course load, work on managing my anxiety, and be well prepared for the final exam. I realize now that, based on my Fall mark, this was not a realistic goal. In the future, I will monitor my success on a course more realistically prior to a drop date.
I am working with counselling services to help me cope with my anxiety issues through various resources on campus. I will register with QSAS for more permanent accommodations, as recommended by my counsellor. Through this process, I have discovered that my aptitude for business based curriculum does not cause me as much anxiety, and I achieved a B+ in Comm 200. I have also noted that I have less anxiety and achieve better results when I can provide a short answer rather than multiple choice.
With permission to register for additional comm courses, in addition to registering for permanent QSAS accommodations, I truly believe that this will allow me to raise my GPA and get me back on track with obtaining my degree at Queen's.
Thank you for your serious consideration and help. It is gratefully appreciated.
Sincerely yours,
Kyle Ainslie
