Dear Dr. Bernard,
I am responding to the email notification that I received on May 23, 2017, advising me that I need to withdraw from my undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science, for a one year period, due to my academic standing.
Since receipt of the notice, I have done a great deal of personal reflection and spoken at length with my family, a university academic advisor and my family physician to assist me in processing my reflections, insights and options. I am respectfully submitting an appeal to the faculty to have this regulation waived, and to obtain permission to return to Queen's University as a full-time student this fall 2017. In addition, I am appealing to request credit standing in the following four courses: COMM 200, COMM 221, MATH 126 and ECON 222.
I believe that my mental health has negatively impacted my academic performance. I have suffered from Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic since 2015 and have sought help from my family physician as well as a phycologist. I have also attempted to manage this disorder using cognitive behavioural therapy. I now recognize that the extent of my anxiety has negatively impacted my ability to focus my study efforts, concentrate on course content, my time management and productivity, as well as exam preparation. I have attached medical documentation confirming this diagnosis.
Preparing for this appeal process has reaffirmed for me what a privilege it is to be a student member in the academic community at Queen's University and how much I value this. I am highly motivated to return this fall and demonstrate my ability to succeed. Being a Queen's student is a tremendous part of my self-identity and factors significantly in both my current and future aspirations.
