Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I would like to submit an appeal to waive my required to withdraw for one year as I believe that I was not able to put my best foot forward and show Queens University what kind of student I really am.
Growing up in an asian household, I was not taught to share my emotional distress or psychological problems. I often had episodes of depression and anxiety throughout the years. Whenever i tried to bring it up to my parents, they often dismissed my problems as not real or too much of a burden. This led to me suppressing my problems and learning to just cope with them.
Moving to Queens led to many positive experiences as well as many negative ones. The biggest being, racial indifference. Being a predominantly caucasian school, being an asian male often left me feeling emasculated as I always felt second to everyone else. Although there was no traditionally bullying, there seemed to be a divide between me and everyone else. I often felt degraded, being stared at, left out and overall treated unfairly. This was socially as well as in group work and activities. This coupled with my anxiety chained me to my room as going outside was a huge burden on me. This fed my depression episodes as i felt that I was not good enough or could not compare to everyone else. These extenuating circumstances led to the fall of my academic standing as I just felt too overwhelmed to leave my dorm room. It is for these reason why I ask you to please consider my withdraw and let me show you what kind of student I can be.
Thank you.
