Academic Plan
I have thought long and hard about my academic plan and I am continuing to see my counselor and doctor to discuss my options. If I am granted this appeal and the courses I listed are dropped I will retake them ¿¿ if I am not granted the appeal to drop the courses however I am able to return to school in the Fall of 2017 I will still retake the courses so that I can get higher marks. When I re-take the courses my first step will be to contact the professors/TAs and discuss with them the best way to succeed in the course ¿¿ as well as I will set up bi-weekly meetings with them to discuss any questions or concerns I might have regarding course content. Along with bi-weekly meetings, I will also be connecting with a tutor for both courses I will take in the Fall and Winter ¿¿ I will begin to see them on a weekly basis until I feel confident to see them on a bi-weekly basis. But, what I believe is the best option for me is to start fresh and I am currently thinking of a plan change which I have connected with an academic advisor with so that I can discuss my options. I believe that the plan best suited for my academic background and strengths is a History degree (BAH) with a potential minor in Environmental Studies. By the end of this week, I will be seeing a Learning Strategist so I can discuss with them my options and the best courses to take for the upcoming school year. I have looked at the Student Academic Success website and all the resources available to me and I will be using those resources so that I can succeed in the upcoming school year ¿¿ by attending workshops such as ¿¿Exam Study Tips¿ as well as their motivation and procrastination workshops, meeting with peer mentors and setting up meetings with the Writing Centre so that I can continue to improve my writing skills which would be a huge benefit if I am granted a plan change. The academic counsellor I have been in contact with as well as my doctor and medical counsellor have both agreed that a reduced course load will lead to my academic success. I will take a maximum of 2 courses per term and if a block on my account is required to not allow me to take more than two courses than of course I would more than happy to oblige.
During the meeting that I will have this week with a learning strategist as well as an academic advisor I will discuss my current summer courses. A History plan does not require me to take a Math or Chemistry course nor does an Environmental Studies minor therefore after the meeting I will ask to drop MATH121 so therefore it does not impact my GPA and therefore I can focus on HIST260. I urge you to please if possible hold of on making a decision about my appeal until I finish my history course so that you are able to see what I am really capable of. This summer I am continuing to see my medical counsellors and academic counsellor to continue to discuss my courses and progress, as well as my mental and physical health ¿¿ my medication is being monitored and I will be taking the summer to get on the right medication so that I do not have extreme side effects during the school year. I am currently working part-time as Onboard Hospitality Staff at Kingston 1000 Islands Cruises as well as I have met with a bank advisor to being a savings account so that I am able to be more financially stable. If I cannot return to school in the fall I will unfortunately lose my job at the AMS Pub Services as I will no longer be a student at Queen¿¿s, this will also cause me to lose my insurance and therefore I will not be able to pay for my medication. Please reconsider your decision to ask me to withdraw, it would not help me, I believe that I would be worse off. But if I am allowed to return to school I will have a part-time job as well as I will be applying for OSAP loans and grants and the Queen¿¿s General Bursary for both the Fall and Winter terms. With a reduced course load and a part-time job as well as taking advantage of the resources available to me at Queen¿¿s and outside of Queen¿¿s I know that I will succeed.
