Subject: Appeal letter to drop courses after course drop deadline
Respected Dr. Bénard,
I am writing today to request an appeal to drop my five courses from the previous year after the course drop deadline. I returned to my studies in the 2016 Fall Semester with every intention of completing my classes and working towards my degree. During the 2016 Winter Semester, I withdrew from Queen's University temporarily due to my depression and anxiety disorder in order to return home where I would seek out help and be with my family. Upon realizing that my degree, a BA in English, was offered online I decided that I would attempt to take courses to further my education and bring me closer to graduation.
I have been fortunate enough to have my parents support me by helping me pay for my education. However, with my brother going through school as well and the time I have taken from switching majors to withdrawing for health reasons, they can no longer help me in terms of my schooling costs. With this in mind, I took up a part time job which quickly escalated into full time work in order to make enough money to pay for my tuition for the 2017/2018 Fall/Winter year as well as to support my family in any way I could. This included 40+ hour weeks which took place in the afternoons, evenings, and nights. With the hours set as they were, I found myself exhausted and unable to focus during the days only to be working long nights. Clearly, this was not well thought out enough as I was unable to keep up with any of the course work and I have now been forced to withdraw for a year due to my GPA. The initial drop in my grades started when I was contemplating switching majors and has been plaguing me since.
By working from September of 2016 to today I have been able to save enough money to truly take on this year with my absolute attention. I have spoken to my management about taking a year off work in order to focus on my studies while leaving a summer and winter period open for work between semesters. There is no doubt in my mind that I can make the changes in my life needed to succeed. I have been keeping up with my medications, worked to make enough money for my tuition, and steeled my resolve to graduate. I want to be able to make something of myself and despite the circumstances I have come to live with I have finally reached a point where I can make my goals a reality. Withdrawing for a year will make things considerably harder and I only wish continue learning at Queen's University.
Thank you for your time in reading this appeal letter. I hope to hear back from you soon.
Thank you,
Patrick Sakamoto
