Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I am requesting an appeal to drop SPAN 111 and appealing for a credit standing in KNPE 167, KNPE 125,PSYCH 101B and ANAT 101 from the winter semester of 2017 due to the extenuating circumstances that I faced throughout last year's winter term.
My personal situation became very stressful at Christmas break when I was informed by my parents that our home was going up for sale as a result of my parents seeking a divorce. I learned that it would be the last time that I would physically be in my home as the house sale would be finalized before I returned at the end of the winter term. Due to the financial struggle between my parents, my mom (who was a stay-at-home mom with no employment) had nowhere for her and me to live as my father was not providing any support to us. As a result, I was told that my mom and I were going to have to live with friends until things got settled. This was an extremely stressful situation to deal with and I found it difficult to focus based on this situation. My health started to decline because of the stress. I suffered health issues following Christmas break of 2016/2017 well into March of 2017. As noted in my health records, I had pneumonia and repeated sinus infections throughout the winter term with rounds of antibiotics and puffers that seemed to have little effect on my healing. I visited both the Student Wellness Center as well as my own family physician. As a result, I missed quite a bit of school and found it difficult to catch up. I tried dealing with everything on my own by emailing teachers and requesting for an extension but it did not seem to be a concern. I graduated Hillfield Strathallan College with a 90 percent average. I am a hard worker and school is my priority. I had a 2.1 GPA in the first (fall) term which I know that I could have maintained or increased in the second (winter) term had I not had to deal with both the stress of my home life and the sickness that plagued me throughout the winter.
As for my current situation, my mom has now found employment and we were able to find our own place to live. I feel less stressed now that life is a little more settled. My health has improved over the summer and I will continue to take care of myself and not get run down. Seeing as my illness affected my courses during the winter semester for such a long period of time, I will be maintaining regular check ups at the school's health care centre to ensure good physical health, as well as seeking a personal counsellor if I feel that my family issues are causing me stress. This will allow me to focus on obtaining my goal grades as well as a healthy body and mind.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
Sloane Domotor
