Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
¿¿I am appealing the faculty¿¿s decision that I must complete MUSC 221 and MUSC 188. I am also requesting AG IN MUSC 160, MUSC 227 and MUSC 162. I would like to drop MUSC 153 and MUSC 205.
¿¿I acquired extenuating circumstances when I was hit by a car on March 23rd of 2017. I sustained a skull fracture, brain injury, and pulmonary embolisms, and was hospitalized for two weeks. I was discharged on April 5th, but was still in very poor condition for the following months. As a result of these circumstances, I was unable to write my exams, finish end-of-year essays, and complete my performance tests. I was hospitalized and then I was in too bad of a mental and physical condition afterwards. For most of the summer, I was unsure whether I would be able to return to Queens for Fall term, and I only realized that my recovery was good enough to continue a full course load recently. I also have a circumstance that occurred in the winter term of 2016 where I fell ill and was unable to attend the Queen¿¿s Orchestra trip to Perth (MUSC 162). I submitted a self proclaimed illness form that I was told would excuse me, and instead, I received a failing grade in the course. This is something that I would really like to fix as I did attend every other event and practice in that course as well as pull my weight.
¿¿I have changed my program from a Bachelor of Music to a Medial in Music and English, as my focus and attention is no longer acute enough to pursue music alone. I am still not positive on how successful I will be in the coming months, but will be going to regular counselling and academic advisor appointments. During the summer, I had frequent appointments for occupational therapy, physiotherapy, counselling, neurology, and other medical checkups and procedures. It would be most helpful and beneficial for me to complete the courses listed during this fall term. I know that the remaining course work will be very demanding on my mental condition in addition to the course load that I already have. This is why I am asking to have the fall term to complete them, and if that¿¿s not possible, I believe that I will at least need two months. I would like to drop the other courses because I did not complete enough of the course work to be able to handle them this semester. The courses that are of top priority in terms of my completing them are MUSC 221, MUSC 188, and MUSC 160. I apologize for filing my appeal at an inconvenient time, but my ongoing circumstances prevented me form writing this with surety at an earlier time.
¿¿I look forward to hearing a response or some confirmation as to what I will be eligible for.
¿¿Thank you,
Charlie Slaney
