Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Studies):
My name is Ye Chen Li and I am appealing to late drop ARTH 212 (Winter 2017) and BIOL 322 (Winter 2017). I registered in these two courses during the winter term of 2017 and because of extenuating circumstances I was unable to complete neither course, in addition due to the coursework that I missed because of the extenuating circumstance I do not feel I can effectively complete either by the deadline of September 15th 2017.
I suffer from nocturnal seizures that are induced by stress and fatigue. After suffering from a seizure attack I cannot normally attend classes, labs, tutorials etc. due to the headache, muscle fatigue and dizziness that results from it. Normally I do not suffer that many attacks during a school year, but something beyond my control happened that worsened my condition at the beginning of the winter term. A good friend of mine had a bad break-up, which I did not know at the time, during one of our group dinners I accidentally provoked him and he unloaded all his anger on me which included threatening my life. I went into depression and felt intense guilt because I thought I had badly hurt him. This put immense amount of stress on me which caused multiple seizure attacks over the winter term, sometimes back to back which increases the fallout symptoms. I tried to come to terms with what happened by supressing the feelings of guilt but since I lived in the same building as that friend we still meet on occasions, which reminds me of what had occurred between us. This went on for nearly the entirety of the winter term I missed the midterms of both classes, I missed a lot of classes either because of suffering from fallout or suffering from depression and seeing no point of attending. I also missed multiple assignments and the final exams from both classes. I tried to sort this situation out on my own because I believed that since he was a very good friend he should realise that I did not meant to cause this, but after multiple tries of asking and even pleading for forgiveness I was given silence and ignored by him.
After the winter term to come to terms and rid my self of this guilt, I started practicing TaiJi to find calmness and peace with myself. I also had sessions with a family friend who is a personal therapist. To treat my condition, I underwent acupuncture treatments during the summer and started taking Chinese herbal medicine to relieve my condition. I also visited my neurologist to talk about my condition and was given a new medicine to take, and see its effects over the summer. To alleviate the impact the courses may have had on my grades I took 3 courses over the summer of 2017, all of which I gotten a good grade on.
The year of 2016-2017 was the only school year which I had tried to take 4 classes per term. To reduce the stress that studies may have on me I decided to go back to taking only 3 courses per term for the year of 2017-2018. I also went and saw an academic counselor recently and developed a plan to effectively progress my academic career. I am only missing 9 grade points from my Major Biology plan and 3 grade points as electives. I plan to take elective courses that I am missing over the summer of 2018 and take the 3 other courses that I need over the fall term 2018 to graduate with my bachelor degree.
