Petition Letter
To whom this may concern,
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to review my academic appeal outlining my request to drop the course ¿¿CLST 102¿ from my course load this semester. There a three main extenuating circumstances in my personal life that have prompted me to make this request. They revolve around a recent death in the family, a sudden breakup in my long-term relationship with my partner, and ensuing mental-health problems that was most likely catalyzed by these other two events. These events all occurred in the last week.
Getting through everyday has been a challenge. As a commerce student, I am incredibly involved with extracurriculars in the school of business, and the mixture of these strenuous commitments along with my recent mental health challenges has proven to only worsen my mental state. I find myself unable to cope with the non-stop pace of my workload that has only accelerated in intensity as the weeks go on. Further, as my responsibilities pile up, I am beginning to feel paralyzed in my attempts to start reconciling the traumatic events that have occurred this past week. Having prided myself as being someone with incredible mental fortitude throughout my university career, I now find myself in an incredibly vulnerable and fragile state. Because of these issues that have plagued me thus far, I initially sought help from my housemates. The breadth of my knowledge of depression and anxiety remedies have always involved communal and social interactions, and I sought to reduce my isolation through confiding in my housemates. However, I was still unable to rid myself from my mental paralysis.
As the week went on, I found myself unable to get out of bed and perform my normal daily functions, such as eating breakfast and showering. I am truly astounded by how crippled I seem to be from this ailment. To escalate my treatment after realizing that simple social interaction would not suffice, I began seeking help from Student Wellness Services via the Mental Health Nurse located in the LaSalle building. I have booked an appointment with the nurse for the coming week, and I hope that this step will help guide my mental state towards the right direction.
Given these outlined negative effects as a direct result of my extenuating circumstances, I believe that reducing my course load will help ease the immense acceleration of my growing responsibilities, affording me some mental capacity to help deal with my depression.
I hope that I have given a succinct overview of the grounds for my request. I genuinely believe that dropping this course will allow me to begin working towards bettering my mental state ¿¿ under the current circumstances of my course load, I feel as if I am suffocating under the burden of academic studies, extracurricular responsibilities through my multiple leadership roles, and the combined timing of the death in my family and relationship breakup.
If you have any questions or concerns, I would welcome them at tony.yu@queensu.ca ¿¿ please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for your consideration.
Best,
Tony G. Yu
