Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I am a Bachelor of Music Honours student and this is my second year at Queen's. Last year, I successfully completed the fall/winter courses MUSC 120 and MUSC 125. Those are the pre-requisites for the 2 courses I wish to add this year: MUSC 220 and MUSC 225. Those 2 courses consist of a one on one weekly piano lesson with my instructor, Dr. Zuk, as well as a bi-weekly studio time. Studio time is 1 hour every 2 weeks in which the piano students have the chance to play in front of their peers. Currently, I am enrolled in MUSC224A (Fall) and MUSC224B (Winter). Those courses also consist of a one on one weekly piano lesson with Dr. Zuk.
The difference between being enrolled in 220A/225A/220B/225B and 224A/224B is the time I spend practicing piano outside of my lesson. In fact, the 220-225 courses indicate that the student is in the performance stream and will perform his/her own recital at the end of the year. More practice time is expected from students in the performance stream. This explains why 220A/225A are 3 credits each and 220B/225B are also 3 credits each. Students in the performance stream are therefore in the double credit lesson program (12 credits a year for lessons instead of 6 credits).
At the beginning of the fall semester, I was enrolled in 220-225 A and B courses, but I dropped them, because I had a moment of hesitation regarding my major choice. I did not know if Music was the right thing for me. I told myself that I should try enrolling in science courses instead, just to try it out. I switched my courses and no longer had the time to practice as much as I did when I was in the performance stream.
However, I now know that music is the right fit for me and I changed most my courses again before the add deadline. The only course code I have left to change is my piano lesson.
Thank you for your understanding,
Yasmina Leveille
