Dear Dr. Bénard,
I am appealing to waive the one term course-drop appeal deadline, regarding the following courses: CISC 453 (Winter 2016), COGS 400 (Fall 2016), MATH 111 (Fall 2016/Winter 2017), MATH 121 (Fall 2016/Winter 2017).
I had not pursued an academic appeal to drop these courses before the end of the one term deadline, due both to the mental health struggles outlined in the documentation, and because I perceived it as unfair of myself to use the appeal system to address my failures. Subsequently, both academic advisors and my mental health professional have encouraged me to let go of that self-limitation, and pursue this accommodation. It was also made clear to me by an academic advisor in my faculty that I will not be able to complete my desired degree without this appeal.
For all of the courses being appealed, my mental health struggles prevented me from attending classes, completing assignments, engaging with course material, and pursuing academic resources, particularly between January of 2016 and May of 2017. These same struggles, as referenced above and in the documentation, also prevented me from dropping or appealing the courses within the appropriate timelines.
These issues were also the cause of a prior appeal for an earlier time period, which was granted. I am very gracious for having been accommodated as much as I have been already, and hope that this further appeal is not an undue burden.
I have continued to pursue regular psychiatric therapy, and have expanded the scope of that support this semester in ways that have been extremely therapeutic. The results of this have been very positive, and are expanded on in the attached professional documentation.
Even during this period being appealed I was doing much substantially better than in years past, but the aftershocks were still felt and my academic performance was compromised accordingly. I have since continued to improve and develop, with support, and hope to have the opportunity to act on the lessons that I've learned and the progress that I've made, and complete my degree this year.
