Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop CHEM 212 (Fall,2017), because I have concluded that I will not be able to pass the course. There are two mid-terms before the final exam in the course, and they are the only assessments that give you a measure of your performance in the course, and on the first mid-terms I achieved the class average, so I was not worried about the course then. However, I got my second mid-term mark back on Nov 17, which was the only other indicator I have had of my performance in the course other than mid term one, and I was disappointed to see I had performed very poorly and failed the test. Other than this late indicator which prevented me from dropping the course earlier, before the deadline, I have also been dealing with health issues. I am currently consulting with my doctor to resolve a health problem that developed right before the start of this school year, which has serious effects such as pain that flares up unexpectedly and requires hospitalization many times. This has caused me great anxiety throughout the year as well as affected my mood, due to the possible effects this could have on the quality of my life as well the limiting effects it would have on my career choice in the future.
Unfortunately, I regret to say that I let the psychological impact of this illness, to cause me to lose focus on my studies, and this has obviously impacted my performance in CHEM 212. My other courses have been affected to a certain extent but not as much, since they are a part of my major and I find the content easier to understand and I have a network of friends that have helped me with the homework and to understand the content, while CHEM 212 is a part of my minor in chemistry and I am the only person I know taking it, so I do not have the same network of support. It is also certainly a more challenging course with higher requirements for passing. I plan to drop my minor, since I have also discovered that I do not think chemistry is a good fit for me anymore, and will be solely focusing on my major from now on. My illness tends to flare up during moments of stress such as before tests, and this has caused a disruption in my studying as well as focus before my tests. I continue to consult with my doctors, and I have been prescribed medication to help deal with the effects of the illness, and I feel a formal diagnosis and treatment plan is near.
I have started coming to terms with my health situation, and feel that once medical investigations are over, I can get over the mental hurdle, and fully develop ways to cope with the physical symptoms. This will help me improve my performance in all my courses as well as my mental health. On a closing note, I would like to thank you for hearing my case and I hope that the contents of this letter will be kept confidential as it is very personal.
Thank you,
