Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to have my KNPE 251 mark be changed to a credit standing. During the 2017 Fall term, I experienced extenuating circumstances beyond my control. Such circumstances affected my ability to achieve my full academic potential. During my first year at Queens University, I achieved A¿¿s and B¿¿s in all my classes accumulating to a 3.21 GPA. KNPE 251 is inconsistent with my academic abilities and does not accurately reflect my work ethic.
During the 2017 Fall term, I struggled with anxiety rooted in complex family dynamics. At multiple times during the semester, I was contacted by my mother, Iris Johnson, whom I have not spoken to or had contact with for approximately three years since being estranged.
The situation escalated around the time of the midterm season, at which point her behaviour necessitated police involvement. A report was filed with Kingston Police and Queens Campus Security was made aware of the situation.
Unfortunately, these stressful events caused additional anxiety and brought on panic attacks, affecting my ability to focus. Having so much anxiety made the learning curve of KNPE 251 extremely difficult. Learning new skills like computer programing is already difficult even at the best of times. I found learning statistics while completing my other coursework for Global Political Economy and Introduction to Health Promotion simply impossible. Towards the end of the semester, I realized I needed help, so I reached out and hired a tutor. Fortunately, she was able to help me understand enough content to pass the course, but with limited time and financial resources, I was not able to do as well as I could have.
I experienced challenges during the semester that affected my ability to learn new skills quickly and apply them in class. I lost focus during the semester, but I dealt with the situations as best as I could and made what changes were possible at the time. In the upcoming 2018 winter semester, I plan to refocus, further reduced my course load and work hours, and to continue to reach out to supports like Chaplin Kate Johnson and my doctor, Stephanie Butt. I believe I have planned accordingly to ensure success in the upcoming year and I hope you will consider my appeal for a credit standing in KNPE 251.
Sincerely,
Leia Johnson
