Petition Letter
LETTER OF APPEAL:
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to inquire about the late addition of a course to this semester¿¿s schedule in the hopes that I may graduate this spring. I took an academic advisement appointment last June and was told that all was in order for me to graduate on time. However, prior to the Winter semester, I swapped one of my courses, and now I am missing 3.0 units at the 400 level. This was only brought to my attention on January 6th. I immediately reached out to my professors to see about adding another 400-level, but it was already past the deadline. I proposed an independent research project to Scott Mackenzie, based on a project I have been working on out of sheer interest since May 2017. My project uses scholarly sources and has involved contacting and interviewing professionals on my own time, and I currently have an eleven-page completed first draft with citations, as well as over fourteen pages of research notes for continuation. Scott Mackenzie has given me permission to pursue this project for a credit under FILM 511.
I am eager to continue my research and to use it as evidence of my eligibility to graduate this spring. I feel very strongly that no other undergraduate film student has chased something like this as far as I have, and I know that when my passion and career cross paths, I will be capable of reaching tremendous heights.

ACADEMIC PLAN
I intend to register myself for an independent research project class (FILM 511). I know I am prepared to undertake this course, even at a late time in the semester, as most of my work has already been accomplished, since I have been doing extracurricular research out of personal interest. I am enthralled by and focused on the study of film in all its forms. While I am acutely interested in film production, I feel that it is instrumental to have a grasp of the critical and theoretical sides of cinema.
Since I am currently registered in only three courses this semester, I am not remotely concerned about the addition of a fourth. Although it is late in the semester, I have completed more than half of the necessary workload that the research project would entail. I am accustomed to balance five courses at a time, so I am positive that I can handle four in my final semester.
In adding FILM 511, I am well aware of what I am signing up for and know that I am capable of succeeding. Aside from my enrollment mishap, I am a good student and do not have any challenges delivering work on time. My current strategy is to plan my daily work schedule hour by hour in a digital calendar. This helps me stay on task and allows me to accomplish more at a faster pace. I have never had difficulty with course content, I am happy with my degree path, I am motivated in all my classes, and I tend to go above and beyond with the material that my professors provide. I consider myself a level-headed and ambitious student, and I am certain that this will stay true when it comes to an independent research project.
For the reasons listed above, I am positive that adding this final course will effectively encourage me to work even harder in my final semester. It will not only allow me to graduate in the timeline I originally intended, but also give me the opportunity to work on research I would like to pursue beyond university and into my career in film.
