Petition Letter
To Whom It May Concern,
I hope with my appeal letter to address two main issues:
1) The extenuating circumstances that resulted in my poor academic performance in 2016-2017
2) My appeal to waive the 21-day or one-term deadline due to those circumstances
In January of 2017 I was diagnosed with a medical condition that would ultimately require surgery. This was a medical condition that I've had for some time but only in early 2017 had the symptoms started affecting my physical and mental health to the point where I sought medical help and I have since moved back home to Toronto with my parents to help with my recovery. I'm happy to say that the surgery was successful, and I am now doing much better physically and mentally.
I want to address my academic performance last year (a lot of it I'm not proud of) but it's important for me to be honest about this in order to move on in a positive way. Much of my 2016-2017 was filled with alcohol and drug abuse, truancy and indifference towards my academic goals. I didn't realize the abuse I was putting myself through by ignoring my mental health and it took very real physical symptoms to put everything in perspective. I stayed at school because I didn't want to face the reality of being sick; I wanted to stay at Queen's and I wanted to be around my friends. I was very stubborn, and it was a terrible mistake.
I've been sober for 6 months now. I'm talking to someone about my health and I'm at the end-stage of my recovery process from my surgery. I'm doing very well and I'm quite proud of that. Taking a year off away from school has been the best thing for me in so many ways.
I'm writing this appeal because this past year (with all of its ups and downs) has reminded me how important it is for me to graduate from Queen's and complete my education. This is something that I still feel very strongly about, and I hope to be able to do this next year as soon as I am ready.
I hope the office will consider my appeal to drop my failed classes and allow me to have a second chance at this.
