Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean of Faculty of Arts and Science,
I am requesting to appeal the 21-day deadline, I am a student of Queen's University with ID number 10061621. I solely understand that I need exceptional reasons for my appeal to surpass this deadline. I would like you to consider my request so that I am able to appeal my case for request to withdraw and my academic records for Winter 2014, which were affected by the same reason of mental health. Below is a detailed explanation of why I am requesting this consideration as well as attached is documentation that I hope will suffice to help me make my case.
As of Winter of 2013, I felt I was having symptoms of depression on the request of my parents I was willing to talk to someone. Due, to my father's condition of paraplegia my parents now live in Tanzania whereby my mother can seek support from her family. As a result, we consulted a doctor in India where my mother's sister resides. Dr. Rao's letter is attached as supporting documentation for this appeal. Dr.Rao prescribed medicines, which in my perspective I believed would suffice to make me feel better. I returned to school as of Fall 2013, hoping to be able to cope up with school. They helped me go through the fall semester and I was feeling better. Once, winter came along due to the weather conditions I began to once again socially isolate myself and thus stopped my medicines as of March 2014. This as a result, caused me to relapse into my condition and I began feeling the same symptoms once again. It is during this time I avoided my academic courses for Winter 2014 semester as well as was not in the condition to write any of my exams.
I was ashamed to seek out for help for the second time from my family and have them go through this again. Thus, I internalized my emotions and avoided communication with them. Even though, I spent the summer in my sisters presence I chose to avoid them and not indicate to them of any of my symptoms. Due to this reason, they were not aware of the relapse of my condition as well as the academic affects, which occurred. In the first week of September, my mum indicated she needs details of my enrollment so she could arrange for my fees to be paid. Her adamant need of information led me to have to fully disclose all the details to them.
In the past few weeks, with the disclosure and the support from my family, I have internally realized my need to seek help but also the importance of me to be close to my family. I had chosen within my condition to neglect all my personal and academic responsibilities until my recent communication with my family. With their support, I understand that I need to address these responsibilities. Therefore, I am writing this letter at this time requesting a chance to be able to address my academic responsibilities. Due to my parent's circumstances, which are outlined in the letter written by mum, I have chose to go live with them in Tanzania until I recover. As a result, we have chosen a psychologist who resides there to help me, because we understand the recovery process can be long and I would like to be close to my parents through it. She has been talking to me over skype every 48 hours in the last few weeks in order to be able to help me feel calm as such disclosures can be overwhelming especially with a mental condition I am in. Her letter is also enclosed with the appeal with her recommendation that I should be close to my dad through this process keeping in mind our personal circumstances. I should be back in Tanzania by the end of this week and be physically meeting with her.
I hope this letter outlines to you my condition in the past few months and my inability to be mentally capable to make conscious decisions to follow through with the deadlines Queen's indicated for decisions to be made as well as my academic performance for end of term in April 2014. I request you to consider my appeal to surpass the 21-day deadline for appeals and allow me a chance to create a ray of hope for my future endeavors. At the moment, I choose to take time off and go back to my parents until I attain full recovery. Understanding this might take a long time perhaps even 2 years, I would like to make sure that when I am ready to return, my past mistakes due to my condition do not hinder me. I hope to transfer once recovered from Queen's to a University perhaps in Calgary, AB or London, ON where my sisters reside respectfully so that I am close to family. In order for this to be possible I have to ensure that I do not leave with an academic record, which might hinder such opportunities. It is with this hope that I request you to consider my situation and my mental health condition. I would sincerely appreciate it if you grant me this appeal on the basis of extraneous conditions of unstable mental health.
Yours truly,
Farhana Bhanji.
