Petition Letter
Associate Dean (Studies)
This appeal is a request for a late drop of two courses (Hist 201 and Socy 122) and to appeal my one year academic suspension. The extenuating circumstances that form the basis of my appeal is depression.
Very early in my second year at Queen¿¿s I became depressed and this continued throughout the fall and winter terms. My depressed mood still continues, though to a lesser extent since I have come home and have sought medical help.
My depression invaded every aspect of my life and my studies suffered as a result. In the winter term, I failed Hist 201 and Socy 122. My other marks were bare passes. My failing studies added to my feelings of sadness. Each day seemed to get me in deeper. My depression meant I felt like I was constantly in a fog; it affected my energy level and motivation; and it affected my ability to concentrate on basic tasks. I felt numb and in pain every day. I was unable to work to the level of academic achievement that I attained in high school and that I believe I am still capable of.
My depression also increased my social anxiety, turning every outing into a daunting engagement. I missed classes and assignments; I didn¿¿t go out; I was and felt isolated in my place of residence. This isolation compounded my depression. I also engaged in other indulgent, numbing behaviour. This feeling of depression was new to me as I had never felt depressed before.
When I spoke to my parents about my situation, they urged me to seek help: to speak to student services or a student health services physician, but I was afraid to do so. It was not until I returned home after the winter session that I listened to their advice and spoke to my family doctor. She is putting a plan in place and I intend to follow it. It has taken a lot, but I am now prepared to accept my situation and to move forward and heal myself. I have attached a copy of my doctor¿¿s report to this appeal.
