RE: First Level Academic Appeal
Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
a. I am appealing to request the transfer of 9.0 units from Athabasca University during the fall and winter terms of 2018/2019. These courses include HLST 301 (Queen's equivalent course: HLTH 3UNS 3.0 units), and CHEM 217+218 (Queen's equivalent course: CHEM 112, 6.0 units), of which a letter of permission has already been obtained.
b. I am an Olympic windsurfer and will be training to compete in the 2019 Pan American Games in July 2019. I have already qualified Canada a spot in the games, however the individual selection event is occurring in January 2019. I will be training into the fall of 2018 and winter of 2019 in preparation for the selection event and in preparation for the games. The two courses I am requesting to transfer are not offered online through Queen's, and therefore am appealing to Queen's to accept 9.0 transfer credits to better facilitate my training and competition schedule. In January 2019, I will be missing 2 weeks of school to prepare and compete in the individual Pan American game selection regatta held near the end of January (dates TBA, likely January 18-20th 2019). Please find attached the Pan American Games Individual Selection Criteria from Sail Canada that outlines this event under RSX, women. In addition to the selection event, I will be training on the water 4-5 times per week during the fall, and the allowance of these online courses would best facilitate my ability to do so. I have taken online courses in the past both through Queen's and Athabasca while training, and it has not affected my academic performance as evidenced by my GPA of 4.21.
c. I have been in contact with my Academic Advisor, Melody Monte at the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, to make an academic plan to better facilitate my training and academic needs during the 2018-2019 academic year. This academic plan includes taking a reduced course load next year (80), as well as the addition of online courses where feasible. We have discussed taking a 5th year of study to allow more flexibility in my course load during the 2018-2019 academic year. Please find attached documentation of permission from the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies regarding my appeal.
I am very grateful to Queen's University for allowing me to pursue my athletic endeavors and would really appreciate your consideration in my appeal. Thank you for your time.
Best regards,
Olivia Mew
