Academic Plan
I am Queen¿¿s History major going into 3rd year planning to take my third year at 2 different institutions away from Queen¿¿s. My ultimate goal is to be able to obtain my degree requirements and graduate on time in the Spring of 2020. Being a history major poses unique challenges in transferring courses taken at other institutions back to Queen¿¿s. According to my degree plan I am required to take three upper year history seminar courses as well as a selection of second year lecture course. The issue is a lot of schools do not offer upper year history seminar courses that fit the definition of a Queen¿¿s seminar course. According to the Queen¿¿s history departments website, ¿¿To receive seminar credit the course should have fewer than 30 students. Class discussion is required, and normally there is an essay component. In seminars, evaluation is not based solely on a final exam. Lecture-tutorial classes, such as those common in British universities, count as seminars if tutorial sessions are weekly, and usually do not count as seminars if tutorials are only fortnightly or monthly.¿ Lucky the University of Guelph offers upper year seminar courses that fit this description that I am planning on taking to fulfill my degree requirements, I have been in contact with the Exchange and Transfer Credit Advisor to ensure these two seminar courses can be transferred back to Queen¿¿s. The aforementioned second year lectures courses are offered at a majority of post secondary institutions and will transfer back quite easily from other institutions worldwide. My plan is to take as many seminar and lecture courses as I can third year so when I come back to Queen¿¿s fourth year I won¿¿t have to be scrambling to fulfill my degree requirements by overloading myself with too many difficult seminar courses trying to graduate on time. I¿¿ve been told this often happens to history students who take some time abroad without thinking about what courses they need to be taking to stay on track with their degree plan.
I plan to take a full course load at Guelph in the fall, if this appeal and my LOP goes through I plan to take two seminar courses and one or two lecture courses (depending on availability and scheduling). The four courses I have chosen are listed below and the descriptions have been taken directly from the University of Guelph¿¿s 2018/2019 Academic Calendar:
HIST4200 Health, Mind and Body F (3-0) 1.00
This is a seminar course which will explore the history of health, the body and the mind. Possible topics include: the history of athletics and physical fitness, the history of disability, the history of nutritional science and advice, the history of women¿¿s health, the history of disease, the history of mental illness, and the history of psychiatry. (H)
Prerequisite(s): 10.00 credits, including 1.50 credits in History at the 3000-level
Restriction(s): Restricted to students in the B.A. Honours program with a minimum of 70 average in all History course attempts.

HIST4450 Life, Death and Migrations F (3-0) 1.00
This seminar uses quantitative sources and methods to explore such themes as social inequality and demographic experience since 1800. It examines the value of such data for policy purposes, as well as the social and cultural contexts in which surveys are developed and undertaken. Students develop presentational and analytical skills through research projects. (H)
Prerequisite(s): 10.00 credits including HIST2450, and at least 1.00 credits in History at the 3000 level or above.

HIST2240 Women, War and Nation F (3-0) 0.50
This course is a survey of the inter-connected nature of gender constructs, nation-states and violence in history, primarily focused on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The course proceeds in a roughly chronological order, examining individuals, nations, revolutions, and wars across the globe. We engage in individual and comparative studies to question the gendered origins and effects of nationalism and violence in history ¿¿ and their continuing relevance.

HIST2300 The United States Since 1776 F (3-0) 0.50
This course provides a survey of United States history from the Revolutionary period to the present. Course lectures, readings and assignments ask students to interrogate broadly the social, cultural, economic and political changes and continuities in America, as well as the nation's emergence as a superpower.

Taking three or four of these courses at Guelph would give me the status of a full time student, in other words I will be taking a full course load. A full course load on top of a part time job is something I have done before and have been successful in, I am 100 confident I can manage the workload without any extra support. I believe i will easily be able to obtain the 65 average needed in each course to allow these course to count towards my Queen¿¿s degree my overall GPA currently is sitting around a 3.0 with my GPA last semester being a 3.3. I do not expect the history courses at U of G to be very different from Queen¿¿s history courses and my interest in the subject matter makes it even more likely that I will do well in the courses. There are no financial barriers that prevent me from attend the University of Guelph as it will cost me less overall than a semester at Queen¿¿s would, I have the financial resources, social supports, and academic opportunities to make my fall semester at Guelph successful and keep myself on track to graduate on time.
Looking past next semester, I plan to go on an independent international exchange Winter 2019 and am looking in to the courses I will need to take abroad to fulfill my degree requirements so I can stay apace with my degree plan so I can come back to Queen¿¿s fourth year and take a regular course load on par with my peers who did not take study elsewhere third year. I have spoken with The Undergraduate Chair of my department, Academic and Transfer Credit Advisor as well as an Academic Advisor and they have not seen any issues with my plan for third year and all feel confident in my abilities to stay on track with my degree and graduate on time despite my abnormal third year.
