Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
My name is Treno Morton, I am writing this letter to appeal letter to drop CLST 203, and ECON 212 from the 2017 fall semester, as well as the 2018 winter semester. I would also like to credit standing Econ 212, GPHY 227, CLST 203 GPHY 102, GPHY 240, as well as GPHY 247. I feel the only class I was able to partially excel in was GNDS 212 due to my background knowledge in the course material, which focused on racism and colonialism.
My reason for these requests, is that I am epileptic, and suffered a seizure a month prior to the 2017 fall semester. The symptoms that lingered after this episode negatively affected my health over the course of the two semesters, causing my grades to suffer as a result. Thankfully these symptoms have gotten somewhat more tolerable with time, although they still continue to negatively affect me to this day. This event has went on to change my life in an unbelievable fashion, not only in the classroom but my extracurriculars as well, I am no longer able to participate in Football due to the migraines I have and other potential health risks.
Throughout the school year I found I was not my usual self. I was not as outgoing, motivated, or able to focus due to migraines and dizziness I was suffering from. I do not believe I was able to actively engage as much as I typically would, and there were often days where I felt so debilitated, that I could not attend classes, which is very out of character for me, for I am a student who tends to never miss class.
Furthermore, I have found with time that I have learned to deal with the issues that I have been facing, and have gotten back to feeling like my normal self. Over the course of the summer I was able to take a class and was able to work to get an A+ in the course. I believe this was a more valid evaluation of me as a student, then throughout the semester where I felt like a completely different individual. I believe my biggest mistake was not taking action sooner, and speaking with my professors during the semester. Going forward, to avoid issues such as this one, I would speak to my professors while things are happening opposed to trying to work through them on my own. I believe this to be the best preventative measure I could implement to avoid issues going forward.
The reason I am submitting this appeal letter so long after the twenty-one day deadline is because it has only been brought to my attention that I was able to do so, and I believe that I should be judged on my the work that I am able to create when I am healthy and have the ability to do so. Things that I have already done to avoid this going forward, was change from an Econ major to Geography major to pursue urban planning something that I am more passionate about, I have made it a priority to inform all of my professors of my health issues the first day of classes so if I ever have to reach out they have some background knowledge of my situation prior to any incidents. Finally, in terms of health and dealing with my epilepsy, I take medication daily for it, and will continue to do so going forward. I believe my improvements health wise, combined with my new found academics principles will help to ultimately help me to achieve my academic goals going forward. I also have spoken with my doctor to get her to submit a letter on my behalf, that speaks to my health struggles throughout the semester.
Thank you for your time,
Treno Morton
