Petition Letter
I am seeking appeals for two of my courses taken in the fall semester. I was not able to perform to the best of my academic ability in these courses due to mental health issues that occurred during this semester.
I was diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder three years ago and it has been an ongoing challenge since. I have a good support system in place that helps me when I am not doing well, but it is hard for them to stop an episode from happening as their main task is to manage it when it does occur. In October I was struggling mentally so I went home for a week to see my psychiatrist. This led to missed classes which contributed to me falling behind even when I tried to catch up. Later in the semester in November I experienced a serious depressive episode which led me to near hospitalization. During this time school was not my priority as I was working with my psychiatrist to adjust my meds according to my changing mood. That episode lasted for a couple weeks and after that point I started to struggle with course work. It was at the time in November where final assignments were due and exams were approaching so I did not give my work the true attention it needed in order for me to do well.
What happened during the time of my episode was beyond my control and I have since worked with my doctors to make sure something like this does not happen again to the extent of my school work being affected.
Thank you for considering my situation, it is greatly appreciated.
