Petition Letter

Dear Queens University,
Unfortunately, I had been placed on academic probation due to poor performance last year in my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Concurrent Education program. My intentions last year after OSAP funded me was to complete my year with marks that would boost my GPA allowing me to succeed to the best of my abilities. Sadly, after numerous situations regarding my home life arose along with some personal issues, I was left feeling utterly useless. Unable to leave my home, I missed several classes and assignments which left me at the end of the year with 3 failed classes. I recognize that I do not have any documentation to prove any sickness, etc, but the emotional, physical, social and financial stress along with adjusting to the Queens campus and lifestyle after being abroad in Europe for the first year became overwhelming to me and wrongly, I did not seek any help.
Currently, I am still in a toxic situation involving my home life, as well as dealing with financial difficulties which are still affecting me at school. However, since last year I have pushed myself to find the problem regarding my school issues, and fix it. I did so because my academic success is the most important thing in my life that will guide me to my ultimate life goal to become a teacher. The steps I have taken so far have been to seek advice from an academic advisor who has forwarded me to the student wellness centre, the financial aid on campus as well as help me plan what courses I need to take in order to graduate. I have a detailed spreadsheet that labels the specific courses I must take for the remainder of my time at Queens University as well as backup options if those fall through. Additionally, I have been attending all my classes and have been handing in assignments on time. I am determined to be on top of my school and my work life.
As of now, my GPA stands above that of academic probation, however, this in no way makes me feel at ease because it is still not where I want it to be. Last year was a very low point for me in terms of my emotional wellbeing and that severely affected my school work. Although I am still battling with my emotional health I am determined to push my academic boundaries in order to succeed this year.
I am extremely grateful for the Queen¿¿s services that helped me learn that going through a rough patch is okay and supported and directed me to where I am today.
Regards,
Leila Shirani
