Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop the following courses ECON 255 (Fall), ECON 241 (Fall), ECON 212 (Winter), ECON 250 (Winter), ECON 255 (Winter), CLST 103 (Winter).
I have been suffering with anxiety and depression. I did not know what was really going on in my mind and body until I was diagnosed in late March. I was terrified to talk to someone about my mental health and I held in my pain for around six months (September-late March) before I finally reached out for help to my doctor.
I began first semester on academic probation and this is when I started to constantly worry about my classes and my grades. At the same time, I lost almost all my friends from first year to a bad crowd that they wanted to be a part and did not want me to be included because I was different. With so many other things going wrong in my life with my family, body image, and my living situation, I isolated myself in my room every day and would never leave the house except for my LLCU 247 course and grocery shopping. This course was truly one of the only things that kept me going through first semester. I took this course to learn more about my step-fathers Spanish history. The class size was around 12 people and I felt comfortable and we watched a few films, it was again only of the only aspects of my week that I looked forward to in the Fall semester. By around the end of October, I completely stopped going to all my classes except my LLCU 247 class. I began having difficulty sleeping and I missed one of my ECON 241 midterms and this was really when I began to lose almost all motivation. I could not understand why I was being lazy and could not have a normal sleep schedule, but the thing is I was not lazy, I was suffering and I just could not admit that to myself or let alone talk to anyone about this. Following this event, I gave up on participating in every course except my LLCU 247 course. I still went to my exams and bombed them and failed ECON 241 and ECON 255. I somehow miraculously passed FRST 290 and I am really grateful.
Second semester is honestly very hard for me to remember even though it is just ending now. I was at such a low point in my life and I had no idea what was wrong with me. This is when things got severe and I was in complete isolation from everything and everyone. LAW 201, is the only course I am not requesting to drop. It was a blended learning course and I could watch the lectures live from my bedroom and the assignments were very short and most were group assignments, so it was less stressful and most of the time I had the help of my group mates on facebook messenger. Law is also a pathway that I have always wanted to discover possibly for my post-grad and watching the lectures that were given by over seven different legal professionals was a really great escape for me. After speaking with my doctor and an academic advisor, we decided that I would write my LAW 201 exam.
On March 27th is the first time I went to my doctor since everything had been going on. After my birthday on March 16th I hit the lowest point in my life. This is when I built up the courage to tell my parents that I did not know what was wrong with me and it was starting to really scare me. I would panic and ask myself why arent you going to the library, why arent you trying to make new friends, it began to hit me that I needed to speak to my doctor and I could not be scared of asking for help anymore.
The reason why I did not drop all of these courses earlier is because I was scared to ask for help and I thought I could deal with everything on my own. I took the advice from my doctor and an academic advisor to request to appeal to drop these courses from my record as these courses do not reflect myself as a student and I want the chance to have a fresh start and leave my past in the past and only move forward in the future.
After seeing my doctor, I have started to utilize different methods and medicines to help me overcome my depression and work on my anxiety. Following March 27th, I have begun to feel more like myself. I am going to take this summer to work on myself and get back to being the person I truly am. I am going to be seeing a psychotherapist once a week, starting next week - I know this will help a lot.
