Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
I injured my wrists/forearms badly in February (carpal tunnel syndrome-like symptoms) as a result of overtraining with my piano studies and have been unable to write, type, brush my teeth properly, or practice piano.
MUSC400 and MUSC421 are both practical courses that require regular practice of piano and the examinations are also playing exams where I have to perform prepared pieces that I have practiced over the year.
After my injury in February, I have not been able to return to regular piano practice due to the pain and loss in motor dexterity in my fingers.
I've been to physiotherapy a few times but without any noticeable improvements - it is almost May now and I am still unable to return to the piano.
The incomplete deadline for a F/W course is September 15, however I do not believe it will be possible for me to be adequately prepared to perform what is supposed to be a year's worth of practicing and development of the works I am learning by September 15th.
Even if I were to make a full recovery by July, 2 months would not be nearly enough to prepare for my exams.
I intend to continue with physiotherapy but realistically if I heal by the end of this summer I would still need at least a term's worth of time to adequately prepare for my playing exams. Even with 4 months time, practicing 3 hours a day would be barely sufficient, let alone having less than that amount of time - which would very likely aggravate what has just healed and carries the likelihood of injuring myself again.
I request that the incomplete grade deadline be extended until the end of the Fall term, which is when I intend to be prepared for my playing exams. (Late December)
Thank you for your consideration,
Andrew Kim
