Petition Letter
Thursday, November 27, 2014.
To Whom it may concern,
I¿¿m writing this letter in concern to dropping ENGL 277: Literature and Gender past the deadline for dropping courses without academic penalty. I find myself unable to continue in this course due to the recent death of my father, Brad Elms, who took his own life on November 3rd. The last three months of my father¿¿s life were very difficult for not only him but also my family and I. Throughout this semester I found myself unable to focus on my schoolwork because I was spending so much time either worrying about my dad¿¿s well-being or actively trying to console him and help him through his battle with mental illness. In October I tried to salvage my semester by dropping another course, PHIL 250, in order to have more time to focus on my remaining 4 classes. Unfortunately, following my dad¿¿s sudden death, I lost the ability to do schoolwork all together. Only now do I feel able to return to my schoolwork, however I find myself 3 weeks behind with very little time left to catch up. In light of this, I¿¿ve decided to drop ENGL 277, as well as ENGL 200 and try to salvage my two remaining courses. The death of my father was completely out of my control and has obviously caused me a lot of grief- I would really appreciate Queen¿¿s granting me this appeal. It would give me one less thing to be stressed about.
Respectfully yours,
Stephanie Elms, ArtSci ¿17
