Petition Letter
Hello,
Firstly, I want to say thank you to whoever is taking the time to acknowledge and review my appeal. Today I am appealing to be able to be refunded for dropping my three winter courses after the add-drop period. At the beginning of the winter term, one of my housemates decided to sublet his room to a man that no one knew. I was apprehensive to have someone new living in the house since I already deal with anxiety and PTSD as a result of sexual assault. Within the first week of school this new housemate had verbally assaulted me and posed as an extreme distraction to the entire house. Distractions have included playing music at full volume from 3pm until 8pm, physically damaging the house property, and screaming at full volume in bursts of anger. As the days went on I received absolutely no sleep and my stress levels increased tremendously. Leading me to have flashbacks and extreme night terrors when I did eventually doze off. Further more, the entire month of January continued with multiple phone calls to the police, absolutely no sleep, being screamed at by a complete stranger and making me feel completely unsafe in my own home. It was not until this man assaulted my female friend that he was later arrested and now we know that he was in a state of psychosis and off of his medication. After six weeks of daily torment and exhaustion I thought that spring break would allow me to click the reset button. I had been visiting my doctor on campus throughout this time but before the break we decided that a Verification of Health letter submitted to my faculty would be best to explain the circumstances I had been going through and allow my professors to understand why I had been absent from most classes and had been behind on my work. Upon submitting my Verification of Health I received a phone call from a faculty member explaining that she would not be processing this until I discussed what's going on in further detail. At the moment I couldn't explain because I was at another doctors appointment but at that moment I felt even more helpless and embarrassed of what my final semester at Queens had come to. After all of these events I decided to drop my courses and come home to better my mental health. I would have loved nothing more than to finish my undergrad on campus and enjoy my last semester at the school I genuinely love but from the state I was in after this traumatizing experience I no longer felt safe or capable of catching up.
