Academic Plan
It was not until over a month later after exams ended that I began to recover from the event. After the panic attack, I had no choice but to open up and tell my family about my struggle with my mental health, which was crucial in recovering. Having my family¿¿s support was extremely impactful and allowed me the courage to seek professional help. I am now receiving different kinds of treatment to help with my mental health. I had my first wellness counselling session by making an appointment at Student Wellness where I have been working on anxiety and stress management skills. Because I live in Kington, ON, I will be taking advantage of student wellness services being open and more accessible throughout the summer. I have talked to my family physician on multiple occasions now of my struggles and am now being prescribed Venlafaxine, which treats anxiety and mood. I have had a thorough discussion with an academic advisor to assist and educate me on academic decision making and the best steps to take next for my future.
If I am given the chance to continue schooling next year I plan to take a very light course load in comparison to my first year. An issue I faced was the initial rocky transition into university and I plan to avoid that obstacle by taking a lighter course load that I can gradually increase in the coming of years for a smoother transition.
Ironically, such a dark school year has left me in a healthier place of mental/emotional growth and with a better understanding of myself. I feel it was necessary for me to have experienced this year to see these extremes in my mental health and to truly acknowledge deep seeded personal issues that I now have the chance to improve. I strongly believe a one year withdrawal will cause my brutal first year to go in vain and will inhibit my ability to move forward, progress further and grow from my experience.
