Petition Letter
Respected Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s University for a minimum of three years.
I had been placed on Academic Probation and was required to get a cumulative GPA of 1.6 or greater, I was able to get a GPA of 1.4.
I have been dealing with mental health issues since my first year at Queen¿¿s, but this was the first year that I took advantage of all the resources available on campus. I attended regular appointments with Allison Lavigne at Student Wellness and took advice from Academic advisors regarding my courses. Additionally, I attended workshops from the Student Wellness Centre for help with my anxiety and from the Learning Commons to improve my writing. As a result my cumulative GPA for 2018-2019 is the highest of my time at Queen¿¿s.
In week 7 of term 2, I met with an academic counsellor, to discuss my options regarding my courses. I decided not to drop CLST103 because based on my assessments at that point, there was a good chance that I could succeed in the course, as I had also done well in CLST 102 in my first term. I was taking regular appointments with my counsellor up until exam week begun and then decided to focus on studying, this worked well for all my other exams, except CLST 103 since it was my last exam and by then I was worn out and under immense pressure and stress. I was unable to do well in the CLST 103 final due heavy anxiety at the end of the term and lack of adequate sleep.
I have done very well in all my other courses, there has been a drastic improvement in my academic performance. I will continue to take a light course load, just as I had this year. I plan on majoring in Sociology, as I have gotten a B in SOCY 122, I will take the required SOCY 200 level courses. I want to also retake CLST 103, as I realize that I cannot improve my GPA unless I retake the courses that I have previously failed in.
In the 2017-2018 term, I was required to withdraw for three years, at the time my GPA was 0.6, but in 2018-2019 after coming back I have been able to raise my GPA to 1.4.
In the chance that was given to me last year, I have demonstrated that with the help of campus resources I can do better academically and succeed at Queens. I have found the avenues that can lead me to raise my GPA higher when given the opportunity.
Thank you.
Regards,
Carmel Francis
