Petition Letter
My name is Connor Vilaca and I am a 3rd year Queen's student enrolled in the English program offered by Queen's Arts and Science Online. I am on the Dean's Honour List and I am in good academic standing, having successfully completed 75.0 units of my 90.0 unit English program with a cumulative GPA of 3.91. I am submitting an appeal request to the Associate Dean in order to complete the remaining 15.0 units of my program by enrolling in 5 courses offered by Athabasca University starting in September 2019. I wish to complete my degree in this manner because I have already taken many of the English and Drama courses offered by Queen's online for the upcoming academic year - other courses, such as Shakespeare and Philosophy of Education - are not available to study at this time. I feel that the course selections I have made are tailored to my unique interests and goals, and also meet the academic requirements upheld by Queen's University.
I have completed all of the core requirements for my program (ENGL 100 and ENGL 200) as well as all of the optional requirements (ENGL 215, ENGL 281, CWRI 295, ENGL 237 and ENGL 223). This puts me in a strong position to request permission from the Associate Dean to complete the remainder of my elective studies through another academic institution. As stated on the Queen's University website, a maximum of 42 units can be attained at another institution towards a 90 unit BA at Queen's; therefore, I believe that the Associate Dean should experience no hesitation about allowing me to complete my studies in this way. The courses I wish to take toward my degree - all of which are level 3 ENGL courses - are as follows:
ENGL 303 - A History of Drama Part I: Early Stages (https://www.athabascau.ca/syllabi/engl/engl303.php)
ENGL 304 - A History of Drama Part II: Modernist Theatre (https://www.athabascau.ca/syllabi/engl/engl304.php)
ENGL 324 - Shakespeare I (https://www.athabascau.ca/syllabi/engl/engl324.php)
ENGL 325 - Shakespeare II (https://www.athabascau.ca/syllabi/engl/engl325.php)
ENGL 373 - Film and Literature (https://www.athabascau.ca/syllabi/engl/engl373.php)
As an aspiring playwright and director, I believe the final course selections I have made will give me a strong foundation in dramatic and literary forms from across history. I will apply the knowledge gained from these subjects to my own creative endeavours, but this would only be possible with the permission of the Associate Dean. I sincerely hope that you will consider my appeal on the basis of my exceptional GPA, as well as the recognition that these courses will help me achieve specific goals for personal, artistic and career development. Thank you very much for the opportunity to study at Queen's University, and I genuinely appreciate your consideration of my appeal.
