Petition Letter
To Whom it May Concern,
I am writing to you today to request a Credit Standing in course PSYC 203. I have taken PSYC 203 twice now (I appealed for a late drop the first time), and I received a D- in this class. PSYC 203 is a pre-requisite for many of the 300 and 400 level PSYC classes and one must receive a minimum GPA in this class in order to take these upper level courses.
In second year my grades started to slip, but I was still holding on. Then third year came around, and I was on track for a downwards spiral. I have been recently diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. I know I don¿¿t need to share this information but I think its relevant to the situation. Since I was being treated for the wrong illness in third year, my condition got a lot worse. It affected my relationships with Professors and peers but more importantly it caused my cognitive abilities to deteriorate. I was unable to concentrate, unable to remember even the most basic terms, and unable to follow or even understand instructions. When a mental illness is left untreated it can affect many cognitive abilities that I need to function properly in school. As a result of this deterioration, I experienced psychosis which caused me to be extremely disoriented, confused, and it gave me auditory hallucinations. Having an untreated illness severely impacted my academic abilities and I received a D- because of this. I believe that if I had not been so ill during this time I could have passed with a much better mark especially because I did so well in first year.
I didn¿¿t drop the course earlier because this was my second time taking it so I was wrongly confident that I could finish with a decent grade. I am choosing to only appeal this grade because I need it to enroll in upper level classes.
My plan for the future involves a lot of self-improvement and minimizing stress. Currently I am enrolled in one course this semester and I spend the rest of my time working on bettering myself and understanding this new diagnosis. I would love to be able to enroll in more classes next semester once I have de-stressed myself with a semester off. Unfortunately, I would need to retake PSYC 203 in order to do that. This why I¿¿m requesting a Credit Standing for PSYC 203.
Thank you for any consideration you can take into account for my set of circumstances. I hope to hear from you soon.
Regards,
Lauren McCaffrey
