Petition Letter
Hello,
I am a third year Political Science student. I took an online commerce course, Comm 200.
As suggested by my professor, Douglas Reid, I am making a request to drop his online course without academic of financial penalty.
He suggested reaching out to my home faculty, requesting them to reach out on my behalf to the commerce department.
There was a glitch on Business school portal (the OnQ for commerce). It would say I am not authorized to access the portal whenever I tried to login; screenshots attached to this email.
At the beginning of the semester I received an email from my TA instructing me to purchase Capsim, a 75 program that acts as a portal and business simulation.
Because I did not have the authorization to use the commerce portal, I assumed the course was focused around the Capsim Portal. I was wrong, it only accounts for 30 of the final mark. I missed a majority of the class and assignments. I have no chance to pass.
This glitch in the University Portal caused an enormous miscommunication. I did not have the resources needed to complete any of the assignments. I should have reached out earlier for help, but I had no idea I was missing a crucial aspect of the course. When I received the error message saying I was not authorized to access the portal, I assumed this was because I wasn't in commerve, hence why I needed to purchase a third party program. Turns out that Capsim was only part of the course, not the whole course.
This whole situation has cause a lot of stress and anxiety, I'm really hoping this can be settled. At most I can get a 30 - this would absolutely kill my GPA. Furthermore, I cannot afford to take an extra class, I worked all summer and continue to work during the year in the Army Reserves to afford my education. I'm really hoping this miscommunication won't cause my failure at Queen's.
Thank you and please let me know if you have any questuons,
Joseph Mikhail
