Petition Letter
After the toughest year I had to go through both physically and emotionally at Queen¿¿s University, I am no longer attending Queen¿¿s University. I have been attending a different university since Fall 2019. Though I am still struggling quite a bit, I was able to start a new chapter with the comfort of having my older sister living with me and with the passion for the program I am currently in. However, I recently have figured that I am on sanction due to Fall 2019 tuition, while I have never gone back to Queen¿¿s.
When applying to different university through OUAC in Summer 2019, I was asked to state any of my previous academic history. I have stated that I attended Queen¿¿s University for the program I was in, and this made me initially believe everything was done through both universities¿¿ systems. On top of this, I was not aware of the fact that it was my responsibility to withdraw all my courses, as when moving to a different university, neither of the universities informed me about that responsibility. Although I was starting as a first-year student at Ryerson, without any given information about this whole process, I believed that everything has been transferred and solved out between two universities and their systems, like OUAC. This made me have more belief in everything I had to do was done. I was not even able to log back in into my Queen¿¿s account at the time, which I recently figured out that it might have been coincidental speaking to ITS. By this point, I believed that I was no longer a student at Queen¿¿s.
But recently, going through my personal email, I have figured that I received an email that says my password for Queen¿¿s account is about to be expired. I questioned, because I wasn¿¿t sure why I was receiving this email. To check whether it was a scam, I contacted ASC and ITS. It was a shock to me that I owe Queen¿¿s my Fall tuition.
Even with the entrance scholarship I was so grateful to have received at Queen¿¿s in 2018, I had to rely on my personal savings, federal government and NB provincial student loans. With both of my mental health and physical health failing on me at Queen¿¿s with going through such bad year, my family encouraged me to move into my sister¿¿s tiny studio apartment. I was pressuring myself to just go back to Queen¿¿s, but when August came, I realized I did not belong there and never will - so I submitted my application very last minute, right before the new term started. There has been so much sacrifices within my family for my comfort and well-being. My family or myself is not at the place where we can afford to pay for a lot of stuff. I still, again this year, am living off of my grants given by the provincial and federal government.
The last time I spoke to somebody on the phone at Queen¿¿s, which was summer 2019, unfortunately I was never told about this. This was a whole another new experience for me, and I was naïve.
I am deeply sorry for the inconvenience I have created for you, the school and anyone (including students) involved. I have learned from my mistake and realizing this, I have proceeded to drop everything for the winter term as soon as I was able to log back on SOLUS, which should have been my responsibility as a student at Queen¿¿s university.
I did not acknowledge the fact that I was still a student at Queen¿¿s, while I have been attending different university. I was naïve, but I also believe that I can ask for some understanding for this unforeseen, unexpected and unfortunate situation, especially at such great university like Queen¿¿s, which I wish I could have stayed if my state allowed me to. I can attach you my proof of enrolment, that shows that I have been attending Ryerson since Fall 2019 if needed.
I am in desperate need of help I realize that as a Queen¿¿s student I cannot be exempted for not acknowledging own responsibility, but ever since I was accepted as a student at Ryerson, as mentioned above, I believed that I was no longer a student at Queen¿¿s in my knowledge. In fact, I have not been to Queen¿¿s or Kingston ever since April 2019, I have never attended any of the lectures or enjoyed the benefits coming from being a Queen¿¿s student since. I am reaching out to you hoping that there is some understanding for my situation and ask for some help for dropping of my Fall 2019 courses.
Thank you so much for your time.
