Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean (Studies),
I would like for formally request to waive the 21-day appeal deadline. I was unaware there was a 21-day appeal deadline until today, when I spoke with an academic advisor at the Faculty of Arts and Science. During the winter semester of 2014 last year, I had an extenuating circumstance that affected my academic performance, specifically for my classes Chemistry 282 and Physics 106. During this period I was very depressed for several reasons; my parents were planning to get a divorce, I was going through a very difficult financial period (because my parent¿¿s business was not going so great), I had anxiety attacks which I did not know how to deal with it, could not sleep well, and I had many thoughts of suicide. This all started around the end of November 2013. During the winter semester I could not focus well on school as I was very depressed, it was deeply a very difficult time for me. I did not know how to handle the great amount of stress that I fainted a few times and had panic attacks. I was mentally and physically not capable to endure the responsibilities of school on top of what I was going through. I had several thoughts of suicide, I was under so much stress that at the time I felt that I could not see a way out. Many nights I would awake crying and screaming because I felt trapped by my circumstances and thought that suicide was the only answer and escape. It was worsening each month and I knew I needed help so during winter semester I decided to seek guidance from a counselor on campus, and I was being counselled by her during this period, throughout the rest of the summer, and I am continuing to seek help and guidance from her today. I feel that the counsellor is helping me tremendously and I am very grateful for her help and support, and I feel that I am getting better and am improving. I am deeply sorry I did not make this appeal as early as possible, I was unaware there was a deadline and I should have acted sooner. If you could kindly waive the 21-day appeal it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Warm regards,
Yoon-Mi Bae
