Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean (Academic),
I am appealing to drop the following courses late, BIOL243 (Fall, 2020) and BIOL102 (Fall, 2020).
I missed the deadline for the drop date because I was still attempting to participate in my courses to the best of my ability until week 9. My mental health became severe over the semester that led to me missing the drop date and not completing my courses. I became aware of my mental health declining during week 4, so I contacted Student Health Services to set up counselling and to talk to a doctor about my mental health medications. My dosage for my medications was increased, and during week 5 I experienced debilitating side effects that caused brain fog, and it was extremely difficult for me to focus on my courses. I want to drop these courses instead of requesting a deferral or an Aegrotat standing because I do not believe I can complete them due to mental health issues severely and negatively effecting my academic progress in all of the courses I was registered in for the Fall 2020 semester.
I was issued a STAC form to accommodate my ongoing disability on October 8th, 2020 and another one on November 19th, 2020 that lasted until the end of the semester. Throughout the month of October, I kept working on my courses to the best of my ability at the time, but my mental health kept declining and I missed many deadlines. I was severely mentally ill during the month of November, and I could not focus on my studies because I was focused on keeping myself alive. I work with a counsellor weekly, and I have had multiple psychiatric assessments. I did not drop my courses by the drop date because I thought I could finish them but was unable due to brain fog and the severe nature of my mental health that negatively affected my academic progress. I am working with mental health professionals at Student Wellness services to get me back on track with my academic progress.
My future plan to achieving academic success is to take a lighter course load until I am not being affected by my mental health in a negative way, and to watch the drop date more closely. I am working closely with a psychiatrist to get the right medication to help me, and I believe this will positively affect my studies. I plan to continue to have regular meetings with my counsellor at Student Wellness Services to support my academic goals.
Sincerely,
Sophie Rees
