Re: Letter of appeal
To whom this may concern within the Dean¿¿s Office at Queen¿¿s University.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain my circumstances.
I would like to start off by saying this past year has been a very challenging one for me and as a result my grades have suffered significantly. I am aware that this is of my own doing however my mental health had worsened and became my priority over everything which meant I had to sacrifice time away from my studies to make a change. I would kindly like to request that my failed courses in the fall term ASTR 101 as well as my winter term MATH 121, CHEM 112, BIOL 103, COGS 100 and ANAT 100 be appealed. I did however pass my BIO 102 course in the fall term and would like to request that it be counted for credit standing as I did put my best effort into this course. Throughout these strenuous months, I¿¿ve had to seek help from my doctor and a psychotherapist due to personal issues affecting my ability to work to my fullest potential. These issues had persisted during the summer and throughout my fall and winter terms. With their help, we decided that it would be best for me to start taking medication to improve my mental health. It was determined that I suffer with depression and anxiety along with other mental health issues (one of those being disordered eating) midway through the fall term. I understand that I should have spoken to my professors about this matter however I was not in the right state of mind to do so and I now realize that it could have possibly avoided me reaching out to you in this letter. During fall term I decided at the time that I would try and push through into the new year and hopefully improve however mid way through the winter term it became an impossible task as my concentration and ability to learn had severely worsened once again. My disordered eating caused serious distraction from the required hours of online lecture material which put me behind and when trying to catch up I felt very overwhelmed and would avoid it. I was sure that I could overcome my mental health issues and persevere through to the end of the year but that was not the case. Through therapy this has been an uphill battle that I am learning to understand and cope with. I take full responsibility for this unfortunate situation however I am determined to make a change for the better.
I would very much appreciate an opportunity to return in the fall as I am really a very eager student and would love to continue studying at Queens. If accepted, I would like to take a summer term course as I believe this is the right step into progressively reworking my mental thought process for a hopeful return in the fall with a full course load. I have already developed strategies that will aid me in my future studies allowing me to cope with my mental health issues that at times hold me back. I have always been dedicated, hard working and successful and my intention is to return next year as such.
Thank you for considering this appeal.
Sincerely,
Taylor Moran
