Petition Letter
To Whom It May Concern:
March came in like a lion for me with the results of my midterm exams. I now know that I am currently failing PSYC 231 with a 49 and PSYC 221 with a 40. Given my past history with psychology courses it is unlikely that I will be able to achieve a passing grade by the end of the term and, therefore, would like to appeal to have these courses dropped.
This past fall semester I struggled through PSYC 251 and persevered through to the end of the course hoping to bring my mark up. Unfortunately, though trying my hardest, I only completed the course with a D.
In PSYC 231 there are only two examinations that make up our final grade: a midterm, weighted at 40; and a final, at 60. The midterm exam was written on February 11 and we did not receive our marks back until March 2, three days after the academic drop deadline. Until this point there were no other academic assessments and my personal progress was indefinite. I do not believe that this was a fair academic timeline. If our midterm was returned prior to February 27 I would have been able to make the decision to withdraw in accordance with the academic deadlines.
The same situation occurred with PSYC 221. We wrote our midterm exam on February 10 and grades were not given back until March 3. Again, there had been no grading or assessments of our progress thus far, and as the drop date approached, I had no gage on my academic standing in the course. In this course, there is another midterm weighted the same as the first one at 20, an assignment weighted at 10, a lab weighted at 5 and a final examination weighted at 45. Again, given the weighting of these examinations and my past history with writing tests and exams, I do not feel confident in my ability to successfully pass this course because of my results up to this point.
I tend to struggle when writing examinations as opposed to papers and assignments, and I do not believe that I will be able to achieve a mark high enough on these two final exams ¿¿ given the weighting ¿¿ to pass these courses. I do not want to have two failing grades on my transcript as it will impact my total GPA score negatively in addition to impacting my ability to apply to grad school in the future.
I am currently a Drama major and I enjoy all my drama courses and extra-curricular activities that I am involved in. I am consistently getting A¿¿s and B¿¿s in these courses. I thought that I might want to minor in psychology but I have come to the realization that as much as I love to learn about psychology, I am not grasping the concepts and it is not an academic career path that is working out for me. It would be much appreciated if PSYC 231 and PSYC 221 could be successfully appealed and dropped from my transcript.
Thank you in advance for your consideration,
Jennifer Cooper
