Petition Letter
To Whom It May Concern,
I am appealing to drop PHAR 100 late due to extenuating circumstances. I will attach supporting documentation from my therapist.
In early June, my husband began to have pain from kidney stones. In late June, my husband was diagnosed with acute kidney failure due to the stones and hospitalized for four days. I spent a lot of time and energy emotionally supporting him as he dealt with this diagnosis. He was hospitalized again in late July to have the largest stone surgically removed. This made it very difficult to complete my academic work, and I effectively lost about a month of work time. I still felt I would be able to complete the course at this point.
However, I also got stalled on a certain module in the course because it covered alcohol and benzodiazepines, and I was sexually assaulted many years ago after becoming incapacitated from accidentally combining alcohol and Xanax. It took me a long time to get through this material, and as a result I??m still only about halfway through the course content. I am not ready to write the final exam before the deferred exam deadline.
I wrote my midterm earlier this month and was trying to figure out plans for completing my remaining assignments and the final exam. However, two days ago, I found out that the man who sexually assaulted me all those years ago??whom I had always believed had not realized I wasn??t consenting, and whom I stayed close friends with as a result??raped someone. This leads me to suspect that his sexual assault against me may have been intentional as well. I have now cut off contact with this man. I am extremely distraught and questioning my previous judgment, especially since this man has played key roles at pivotal points in my life and was close to me for 15 years.
I do not feel that I am likely to be capable of doing academic work before September, especially since I am having a surgical procedure on August 17, and my husband is having an additional surgery to break up more of his kidney stones on August 24. I would like to late withdraw from PHAR 100 so that I can start fresh with a different course (likely PSYC 100, which would be difficult to combine with outstanding course work from PHAR 100) in September. I think I really need the month between now and the start of the fall semester to recuperate emotionally from everything that has happened.
Also, my computer glasses broke yesterday, and I am not sure how long it will take to get them repaired. I do not want to have to complete academic work using either my reading/phone glasses or my old computer glasses that have an out-of-date, eyestrain-headache-inducing prescription.
I would greatly appreciate if if I could drop PHAR 100.
