Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
My name is Riley Kim, and I am a first year student at Queen's University. I am appealing to drop ASTR 101 (Fall, 2021). The instructor/professor of this course is David Hanes, and his Queen??s email is hanesd@queensu.ca.
I must drop this course due to extenuating circumstances. After my first week here, I have been through a traumatic nonconsensual experience that has affected me both psychologically and physically. Despite my best efforts to forget and continue on with my school work, my Astrology class has been affected severely. I have struggled to watch the lectures, and have fallen behind on the laboratories, unit tests and assignments. This traumatic event happened on the night of September 12-13th, and will probably permanently affect me as I go on. I believe that this event has impacted me and my studies (especially in Astronomy) a lot. After the occurrence, I have met with a couple of people who can help me in my situation, and have decided to seek professional counselling when I am fully ready, hopefully very soon.
Should this appeal be granted, I plan to succeed in my studies in the future by organizing my course load and replacing this course with another one either in the spring/summer, or during the next school year to make up for my credits. I am determined to not let this traumatic event derail my studies. Another thing is that I will be keeping up with mental help and support as we go, and believe that by the time the next school year starts, I will be fully mentally prepared.
I hope that you will sincerely consider my request for a late drop in Astronomy, and I guarantee that with time I will be fully prepared to continue on.
Sincerely,
Riley Kim
