Petition Letter
To: The Associate Dean
The Request: I am appealing to drop SOCY227 and SOCY 211 after the academic deadline
Explanation of Extenuating Circumstances: I am seeking this appeal because on February 25, 2014 I sustained a concussion that affected my academic performance for the remainder of the 2014 winter semester and has continued to affect my performance. The injury physically impeded me from attending lectures and tutorials and has continued to affect me psychologically. The injury has affected my decision-making skills as well as caused anxiety and stress, which is why I went to LaSalle to help deal with these issues. I had things under control and the academic term was going well however my mom was diagnosed with an untreatable form of cancer during reading week. This news in combination with the effects of the concussion has set me back in the two courses and I have become withdrawn and overwhelmed. I emailed Professor Molson about aegrotat standing in the 211 course, however, he said that because it is a blended course ¿¿this is a situation in which an appeal to drop the course late is more appropriate than an attempt to get an AG grade.¿ This appeal would get rid of a great deal of stress and allow me to succeed in the other two courses.
Future Plan: I am seeing a counselor at LaSalle to help deal with these issues. I have also taken advantage of other facilities like the Learning Strategies Centre to help build a schedule and plan for course work. I have also spoken with academic advisors who have suggested that I could take a course in the summer that would be equivalent to SOCY 227 if I am up to it. I have also met with Dr. Hand to discuss this possibility.
