Petition Letter
Before beginning, I would like to give a quick explanation as to why this request is coming a bit later than expected. I was planning to drop this class early in April, however, after being hesitant and going back and forth, and with some confusion as to how to make this request with the final exam coming, I was waiting for the documentation needed to submit this appeal.
To explain my situation, I have had a really tough fall and winter semester. A very personal family matter occurred last semester, and has taken a huge toll on my life, academically, professionally, and socially. I was taking five courses last semester, and the event really impacted my academic work last semester. I got a D in one of my courses, I still had outstanding work for another course that I recently submitted two days ago, and I will be completing the final coursework for a third class from last semester in the next two days- I mention this to explain how tough it has been keeping up with my academics.
However, after the fall semester was over, I immediately traveled back home for the winter break and used the break to get my focus off of what was happening. After spending some time with my friends and family, I thought that I would be prepared for the winter semester, and believed I would be able to manage a full course load, so I enrolled in five courses. I spent the first half of the semester back home, and came back to Kingston after reading week. However, the return to Kingston was incredibly tough, leaving the joy I was having back home, leaving my parents in time of need, this was not easy, and I continued working with QSAS and continued seeking counseling regarding my mental health, however, by mid March, I was just feeling so down and depressed, that I couldn??t focus on any of my school work. Although I have accommodations, my condition was so bad that I lacked the courage to even reach out to my professors to discuss my accommodations (I have done so now for the rest of my classes). But all of this stress and feeling down disabled me from being able to focus. I really just can??t complete this course with everything going on, I need to drop it. I had a very rough start to the semester which has poorly affected my performance in the course until now, and even if I do find a way to study for the final, I know I will not perform at all how I want to, and how I could if I was in a better mental space. I haven't taken the final exam, and I will inform my professor of my request to drop this course past the deadline so that I will not have to take the final exam until this appeal has been reviewed, and then I can best act on that.
Although I have struggled quite a bit, I have a plan for moving forward. I am flying back home for the summer break, in which I will seek professional therapy to work on my current condition. I will also reach out to the academic advisors to understand what I need to do moving forward if I am successfully able to drop this course. Lastly, I will not take a full course load until I am certain I can. Which means that for next year, I will probably take 4 courses each semester, so that I can be fully focused and able to manage all my schoolwork.
I would like to thank you for your time and consideration, I only hope that you can grant my request, I am in desperate need of this.
