Academic Plan
I am currently registered in my desired degree plan Political Studies, but I am missing certain requirements as in completed units. I have looked at SOLUS and have begun planning my academic plan around the current 33.00 units that I have taken towards my Political Studies degree. Once I meet with an academic advisor, which has been very difficult to arrange because of the COVID-19 pandemic. I have a meeting scheduled for Wednesday June 15th at 3:00pm where I will be able to properly develop the next few years of my plan with goals and steps towards achieving them.
I am enrolled as a full-time student taking four courses per semester to give me more flexibility and a lighter course load during the year and taking one summer course to make up that fifth course. I have academic accommodations and with those I was advised to take a lighter load to stay more focused and successful during the academic year.
I have encountered various challenges throughout my time at Queen??s University especially with an essay-based program. The content within my program is very advanced and discusses the power of politics concerning institutions, govern communities, practicing voting habits, behaviors and culture in societies. Political scientists study the distribution of wealth between nations. I do find it difficult to find academic sources for research papers and have high quality academic research skills since it takes practice and I am still learning and improving. For seeking support, I have the help of Teaching Assistants and set up a meeting through email or zoom sessions to ask any questions which I will continue to do. Another resource which will be beneficial is taking an on-campus workshop to learn how to improve writing skills or study habits.
The lectures that are being taught are fast-paced and demanding for students who have troubles with listening while taking notes. It is important for me to compare notes with my fellow classmates and be able to access peer note taking platforms or have access to a scribe. This was difficult these past two years because of the Covid-19 Pandemic since less students volunteered to help with peer note taking. The course work that I experienced is very captivating and fascinates my interest in learning about the relationships between political groups and political institutions in our society, being critical for political participation in society within communities and nations. I did find it strenuous to manage my time when it came to preparing for exams and completing writing assignments. In this coming year I will be consulting with a learning strategist in Student Academic Success Services or a mentor through the Peer Mentor Program to discuss strategies for my learning style, as well as online resources for study skills and habits that can improve my academic performance.
