Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
My name is Margann Tobin and I was a student at Queen's during the 2006-07 academic year. Unfortunately, due to burnout and depression, I had to drop out of my studies. I had every intention on returning to Queen's but I had to focus more on getting a job and supporting my parents and, in so doing, it never happened. Furthermore, I never formally withdrew myself from being a student for that very reason.
In hindsight, I realize, too, that I was in no way ready for university academia. I find it fascinating to think that there was actually a course that I was passing. I thought that University Preparation courses in high school were going to help me but I was nowhere near prepared for the difference in what is acceptable for a high school essay or assignment, and that of university.
Over the years, I have contemplated going back to school someday. I eventually thought about taking language courses as I have always been interested in learning different languages. I also did not want to pursue an actual degree and that is when I found out about non-degree studies. I initially wanted to take asynchronous courses from the University of Toronto but, due to outstanding tuition fees, I was unable to obtain my transcript from Queen's and my application was refused. I then thought about the possibility of returning to Queen's as I still live in Kingston.
In the years since my informal withdrawal from my studies, a lot has occurred to help get me on the right track. My depression is under control thanks to medication and my own personal resolve. I have also had some jobs. I know now, though, that the time is right for me to return to the academic life that I have loved so much.
I saw on the Return to Studies form that non-degree studies are for students who have graduated. I know that I did not graduate but I would like to take non-degree courses in the foreign languages offered at Queen's.
I thank you in advance for your consideration and I anticipate your response.
Sincerely,
Margann Tobin (Student Number: 05587432)
