Dear Dr. Stephenson (Associate Dean (Academic), Faculty of Arts and Sciences)
My name is William Wang, student number 20151906. I'm writing to seek permission to complete the majority of my fourth-year courses at a university other than Queen's, as per Regulation 14.4.
Here is my situation. I'm a fourth-year POLS major expected to graduate at after the Winter term of 2023. My current GPA is 3.9. My family and I have decided it's best I not return to Canada due to the risks around COVID-19 as well as the financial difficulties we are experiencing. I'm also concerned about the travel conditions China has in place, which creates a reasonably high chance of getting stuck in Canada after graduation.
Finally, I'm very anxious to graduate on time. If I don't, my graduate studies will be delayed. Given the priority Chinese employers place on age (all else equal, they generally prefer the younger candidate), along with the gap year I've already taken, I'm worried further delays could diminish my employment opportunities substantially.
I have spoken with Professor Kyle Hanniman, the Undergraduate Chair in Political Studies, about these issues. We have decided I should take the 590, the undergraduate honours thesis, which will cover 9 of my 12 fourth-year POLS requirements, and doesn't require me to be on campus (Professor Hanniman has also agreed to supervise the thesis). But I still hope to take many, if not most, of my remaining credits on a Letter of Permission.
