Petition Letter
To Dr. Jenn Stephenson, Associate Dean (Academic):
I am writing to appeal to drop FREN 320 (Winter 2022) and MUSC 315 (Fall-Winter 2021-2022) after the drop date due to extenuating circumstances.
In October 2021, I sustained my fifth concussion. While it affected my performance at the end of the fall term, it seemed mild enough that I believed I would be unaffected during the winter term.
I am appealing to drop both of these courses because -- while their content is not similar -- the physical elements of the learning environment, the methods of participation, and the deliverables are very similar. Both classes took place in large rooms with plenty of people and had harsh lighting with noise beyond what I could control or tolerate. Both courses relied heavily on aural perception and oral production, skills I struggled with as I recovered. While I understand my medical note only reads Choral Ensemble, I believe the similarity between the courses described above means that this note should be sufficient for this appeal.
I stayed in MUSC 315 after the November drop date because it was my doctor's original assessment that, with enough time, I would recover enough to tolerate that specific learning environment. Concerning FREN 320, I remained enrolled past Week 2 because I enjoyed the material and found it manageable at home while learning remotely. The earlier-than-anticipated return to campus, and the challenging nature of these courses in person, meant that I did not realize how difficult these courses would be and how behind I was in my recovery until March 2022.
In a recent meeting with a concussion specialist, many months after the concussion occurred, he gave me the all-clear to return to normal activities. As such, I am sure this concussion will not impact me further as a student.
